<< Leitrim’s reputation as a “green” tourism destination appears to be on the wane at least in Germany.
Contributors to a German on-line forum for cruising enthusiasts have voiced their anger at the environmental impact of a number of local projects along the world famous waterway’s banks.
One project that received a number of negative comments was the controversial felling of forestry at Acres Lake on the outskirts of Drumshanbo. Maintenance work carried out by Waterways Ireland along the King Fisher Cycle trail has also come in from criticism from perplexed German tourists.
Some of the comments posted highlight the depth of the contributors’ feelings such as
“it is simply incomprehensible, what has gone around here with nature” and “the section between Knockvicar and Clarendon was, for me, one of the most beautiful on the whole Shannon. The sight of the stumps of the old trees in Rooskey made me furious. In my eyes this is absolutely sense-free destruction.” >>
